"The Taming of the Shrew" and "Ten Things I Hate About You" Comparison paragraph

"The Taming of the Shrew" By William Shakespeare and "Ten Things I Hate About You" Directed by Gil Junger are very similar in they way they connect with each other other than the basic difference that "Ten Things I Hate About You" is based in modern day. The strongest traits throughout the movie and the book are the symbols, and that people aren't how they seem. "The Taming of the Shrew" uses the moon and sun as a symbol, and how many of the character in this story aren't what they seem either through costume or through personality changes. "Ten Things I Hate About You" shows the main symbol is Kat's home, and many of the characters hiding behind insecurities. The symbols that have the same meaning in both the book and the movie is the symbol of conformity for Katherine. These symbols are the moon and the sun in "The Taming of The Shrew" and the home in "Ten Things I hate about You". The moon and the Sun symbol is shown in the story after Katherine and Petruchio set out for Bianca's wedding, when Petruchio is still determined that Katherina should be tamed when he states that "It shall be moon, or star, or what I list, Or e'er I journey to your father's house." Surprisingly the sun and moon symbolise Katherina's conformity to her husbands abuse when she agrees "And be it moon, or sun, or what you please". This symbol shows the conformity of Katherina. In the movie, Kat is equally as complex as in the story but the modern twist, which causes the main symbol to be different but in the end the meaning is the same. A main symbol in "Ten Things I Hate About You" is the guitar. The guitar is a gift to Kat after Patrick finds himself in a predicament when Joey ruins everything exposing the deal. It is an important symbol because it is showing that even though Patrick messed up the deal and agreed to it in the first place, he really has true feelings for Kat and is able to find a common balance between controlling her and helping her.The symbols really tie the two objects together.  Costumes and fake personalities were also very prominent throughout both the story and the movie. The characters that start out in costume become themselves by the end of the story and the movie. In the story many of Bianca's suitors are in costume to try to woo her before anyone else does, such as Lucentio who becomes her husband in the end after being positive that he has fallen in love with Bianca after seeing her the first time,  but shortly after posing as an Language tutor he has his servant Tranio pose as him and offers the biggest dowry which in the end is what causes the marriage. In the movie Patrick has a very thick persona of a bad kid with a bad attitude but as the plot goes on you realise that behind the black clothes there is a man capable of being sweet and romantic, which is proven when he recites the song and gifts the guitar to Kat. The movie closely follows "The Taming of The Shrew" in more aspects than one but the main two are through the symbols and the alternate persona's expressed throughout both pieces.
